UCAN is a student-run community service network that was founded by two BDIC students, Kurt Schultz, concentration: Cognitive Neuroscience and Sam Mardell, concentration: Science, Technology, and Society. It connects UMass students to volunteer opportunities in the Amherst public schools. There are no required classes, no weekly meetings, and students volunteer on a consistent basis. Students are matched with opportunities based on their schedule and their interests.

The BDIC Student Advisory Board will be hosting a Faculty Sponsor Appreciation Night on November 7th, from 4:30pm to 6:30pm at the University Club. Please join us for a night of conversation and celebration as we welcome our new BDIC Director, Michael Sugerman. Do not miss this wonderful opportunity to not only meet Professor Sugerman, but also to network with Faculty Sponsors and other BDIC students.

After two years of serving with AmeriCorps VISTA in both Springfield, MA at Greater Springfield Habitat for Humanity, and one in Anchorage, AK working with a rural village energy education program (and a brief stint traveling across the country and giving dog sled tours at Mt. Bachelor in Oregon with Iditarod musher Rachel Scdoris), I am now living and working full-time in Anchorage, AK. As a Development Specialist, I am on the Development team at Rural Alaska Community Action Program, Inc. (or RurAL CAP).

Come and learn how to create your own unique, interdisciplinary major on campus.
